The house to the left is a drawing of my husband's grandmother's house on the corner of John R and Alfred streets in Downtown Detroit in the early 1900's
My name is Sharon Napier . I am the Little Doll Shoppe. I make my own porcelain with my husband Jan, I pour the doll parts, clean the greenware, fire the doll parts to bisque, paint the doll parts and fire them again and then send the doll parts out to museums, doll hospitals, doll shops and doll collectors around the world.
I began my doll making career in the late 1970's. It was the perfect business to have with four young children. I could work when I needed to and still be home when my children got off the bus.
I loved teaching doll making classes. My students became my extended family. Their beautiful dolls gave them and me a sense of accomplishment. In 1987 I bagan to sculpt and create my own dolls. One of them was used as a souvenir doll for the Battle Creek, Michigan Region 12 United Ferdration of Doll Clubs Conference. She was "Soujourner Truth. 500 Soujourner Truth dolls were given to attendees of the conference as their souvenir. She was my doll from start to finish, my design, my clothes and my work.
My next big project was Sarah Bolton for a Region 12 Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. There were only 450 of her but she was more work because she was all bisque. Since I was so busy with Sarah, I had to give up my doll making classes. I continued to make dolls after Sarah for doll club mini conferences, holiday parties and as special orders.
In 1993, I began working for Joyce Francis in her shop called Joyce's Doll House of Parts. Joyce was in business for over 27 years. Joyce made reproduction doll parts so doll hospitals and collectors could replace their broken doll's limbs. In 1996 Joyce wanted to retire and I bought her business. I incorporated her doll parts into my established business and have been known for over 30 years as the Little Doll shoppe.
I have continued in business. but for the last 8 years, you had to find me because I didn't advertise. I had both of my knees replacesd in 2000 and then moved into a new house. The move was harder than I anticipated and I had a hard time setting my business up. It was difficult to get excited about making doll parts full time after the move. I think I am ready to resume the process on a limited basis. It may take me longer to send out parts but I will eventually deliver tham. There is a need for replacement doll parts that the internet still cant fill.
Doll parts do come up for sale, but rarely do they fit the doll you are trying to fix.
My husband Jan retired a few years ago and we do travel. I also am the co-porducer of the Largest Doll Show in Michigan. My partner, Michael Wolk-Laniewski and I are "Doll Show Productions" and we produce the "Dollicious" Doll Show and Sale twice a year, in May and November. Our next doll show is November 1, 2009. The show has over 212 tables and 93 dealers. Please see our site at WWW.DOLLSHOWPRODUCTIONS.COM
I buy, sell and appraise antique and collectible dolls and hope this hobby keeps my going for a long time. I don't think there is a time limit on doll collecting as long as I enjoy it, I will do it.
